MARCH!
We are unfortunately still in the thick of winter here in Ottawa. If you are somewhere warm, please don’t talk to us. We don’t like you right now.

It’s been an exciting month in the Canadian novel world! Canada Reads 2014 wrapped up and unfortunately last month’s pick, Annabel by Kathleen Winter, did not win. But all the books were incredible Canadian achievements (the UBC has read two – Half Blood Blues and Annabel). I recommend checking out this recap if you missed the debates. I listened to them all in my car!
Did you have a nice Valentine’s Day? Our fashion guru Yvonne shared this colourful post to mark the special day. Generally I think the Hallmark holiday is a great excuse to buy fresh flowers.
Our BIGGEST news of the month is this:

That’s right – the UBC has it’s first book club baby!!!
Well, more like Erin did, but we’re all super excited. James Paul Hopkin was born at 9:06 a.m. March 3rd, and weighed 7 lbs 14 oz. He came three weeks early too! Now we’re just waiting for Kristy’s baby girl to arrive (she’s due March 26th, so any day now). Congratulations Erin!
This month, Laura had the honour of choosing our 40th book AND hosting our meeting, which doubled as an Oscars viewing party. Amazing. We had a crazy food spread and Aimee even had a quiz for us. I hadn’t seen a single movie so I did poorly, unfortunately. But it was fun to guess. And check out the pretty outfits.
Our book this month is a fun read (which is awesome since it follows Annabel, which was more controversial and challenging). Laura chose Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple! The novel is comprised entirely of correspondence (letters, emails etc.) and chronicles a month-daughter relationship. Laura read it while vacationing last year and says it’s really funny. Personally, I am excited to read something light-hearted and cute!
What are you reading to ward off the bitter cold these days?
